Bear Naked Granola

by Mary Zak, HVParent & Life Sales Associate

We got Bear Naked in the office!  Bear Naked sent their granola family to us in hopes we'd share some good words about it to our family of readers.  Since I'm considered the office health nut AND my coworkers know I'm a sucker for sweets, I was sent home with two bags to try.  I opened the bag of Banana Nut flavor first and blurted out, "Wake up and SMELL THE BANANAS!"  What an aroma!  With banana chips, whole almonds and walnuts, it was both crunchy and chewy in each bite.  I was happy to see that it was sweetened only with honey and maple syrup.  And look, Mom, no preservatives!  Next, I moved on to the Apple Cinnamon bag. The scent of this one didn't leap out of the bag.  It was SUPER sweet, so I checked the ingredients and found that though there were lots of chewy little dried apple slices, there's more evaporated cane juice by weight, with sugar, fructose and brown rice syrup showing up for a total of four sweeteners.  If you're trying to wean your kids off the major national brand of apple cinnamon cereal or one of the supermarket knockoffs, this could do the trick.  It's the lesser of the evils.  I'll admit it; I ate half the bag while I wrote this.  I want to know who got the bag of chocolate flavor....

I have to confess to keeping the chocolate flavor for myself!!!   I'm well known as a chocoholic and the apples don't fall far from the tree.  Also, being a bit frugal,  I hate to try something new on the kids, only to have it go to waste.  This was my perfect chance to see if they'd fall for something healthier than the cocoa crispies they love.  I will definately get this product again!  It was a hit with all... milk improves the flavor, but it was equally nice as a snack served dry.

I've been noticing Bear Naked in several local grocery stores here in the Hudson Valley, now that I know to look for it.  If you'd like to try some for yourself... just email me webmaster@excitingread.com and I'll send you a bag or two & one lucky reader will also receive The Breakfast Cereal Gourmet cookbook along with their samples!
